The syllabus is not the same for every certification. Here is what each level expects of you in this area.
Basic
For basic certification
6 topics- Definitions: longitude and latitude
- Maps and charts: VNC and VTA, topographic symbols, elevation and contours, aeronautical info, scale, lat and long, CFS
- Time and longitude: 24-hour system, conversion between UTC and local, sunrise and sunset
- Pilot navigation: use of aeronautical charts
- Flight planning: area choice, NOTAM, CFS, fuel and energy, weight and balance, documents at control station, serviceability and config, wind effect on range and endurance
- Radio theory: LF, HF, VHF and UHF characteristics, frequency bands, limitations, propagation and interference
Advanced
What advanced certification adds
4 topics- Definitions: variation, track, heading, airspeed, bearing, wind velocity, drift
- Pilot navigation: bearing and distance, variation, true and magnetic track and heading, airspeed vs groundspeed
- GNSS and GPS: principles, causes of signal loss and interference
- Other radio and radar aids: ATC transponder, locator devices
Mock exams mix all eight areas, just like the real exam.
