Aeronautics Act and Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs), especially Part IX (RPAS), airspace, aerodromes/airports, regulatory radio communications and air traffic services.
The syllabus is not the same for every certification. Here is what each level expects of you in this area.
Basic
For basic certification
15 topics- Aeronautics Act: Definitions (aerodrome, airport, PIC)
- Definitions (RPA, RPAS, C2 link, control station)
- Application (not indoor or underground)
- Inspection, documents, prohibitions, record keeping
- Forest-fire restrictions and NOTAM (advanced only)
- Directed bright light, notification, PIC obligation
- Munitions of war (no weapons unless authorized)
- Interpretation and application
- Reckless or negligent operation, restricted airspace, involuntary entry, emergency perimeter
- Registration of RPA
- Application (RPA under 250 g not subject to these rules)
- In-VLOS rules (right of way, VO, altitude and distances, site survey, night, ELT, transponder, records, incidents, dropping objects…)
- Basic operations (basic certificate, recency, exams, retake)
- Transportation Safety Board (TSB): accident reporting
- Flight service stations (FSS) and flight information centres (FIC)
Advanced
What advanced certification adds
9 topics- Aerodromes (application, prohibitions, fire prevention)
- Airports (prohibitions, fire prevention)
- Airspace: structure, classification, transponder airspace, Class F, VFR in C or D
- Operation at or in the vicinity of an aerodrome, MF reporting
- Radio comms: listening watch, VFR two-way failure, ESCAT
- Advanced operations (advanced certificate, controlled airspace, airport or heliport, EVLOS or sheltered, VOs)
- Training and flight review (flight reviewers, qualifications, exams)
- Special flight operations RPAS (SFOC-RPAS)
- Communication procedures, ATC clearances, instructions and read-back, controlled or uncontrolled aerodrome, MF or ATF
Mock exams mix all eight areas, just like the real exam.
